Many kinds of fruits have in Bangladesh. They are different from one another in sizes, shapes, colours and tastes. Some are big and some are small. Some taste sweet and some taste sour. Even some are slightly bitter in taste too. Some are solid and some are soft. Some are succulent and juicy too.
The mango is the most famous of all the fruits of Bangladesh. It is the king of fruits. It is the fruits of summer. It grows all over the county, particularly in Rajshahi and Dinajpur areas. It has a lot if varieties such as the Lengra, the Fazli, the Gopalbhog, etc. Of these the Langra is the most famous for its sweetness, flavour and taste. The Fazli and the Mohonbhog are also very tasty. Green mangoes are used to make a large variety of sauces. Children and women are found of green mangoes because of its sourness.
The banana is another delicious fruit of Bangladesh.
It grows all over the country almost throughout the whole year. But it doesn't grow equally well in all the districts here. Munshigonj is famous for its bananas. The best varieties of bananas are sabri, Amritsagor, agniswar, and champa. The banana is very nutritious and forms a good food by itself. Ripe banana taste sweet. The green plantain which is available throughout the year is used as a kitchen vegetable.
The jackfruit is another another notable fruit of Bangladesh. It is the largest of all fruits. It is our national fruit. It is found all over Bangladesh mainly in the months Jaistha and Ashar. But it grows in plenty in the hilly areas Chittagong and Sylhet and in the high land of Dhaka, Narasingdi, Mymensingh, Comilla and Jessore. It has a rough and prickly skin. Inside the skin the fruit is found to be composed of many juicy flakes. When it becomes ripe, it is delicious and succulent to eat. It is also very nutritious. It is also in great demand with the common people, for it sells comparatively cheap. Besides this, it serves as food and can easily appease hunger.
The coconut is another important fruit of Bangladesh. It grows in plenty in coastal areas. Its milky fluid is a good drink which quenches our thirst. The kernel insides serves both as a nutritious food and as a source of oil. The outer fibrous husk gives us coir which is used for matting, ropes etc.
The pine apple is another delicious, juicy fruit of our country. It grows well in Sylhet, Comilla, Dhqka, Chittagong and Chittagong hill Tracts. It is available in large quantities in rainy season. It has a prickly skin but it contains sweet yellow flesh. It is full of wonderful juice. It is a highly palatable and health giving fruit.
The litchi is another is another good fruit. It is very small in size. It is also a summer fruit. It has an acid taste. Children are very fond of it. It is found everywhere in Bangladesh, but it grows in abundance only in Rajshahi.
The orange is another good fruit which is rich in vitamin C. It is a winter fruit. It grows only in the district of Sylhet. As it grows in no other place in our country. It cannot meet the demand of the people, and thus it sells very dear. Besides, lemon is another fruit which is rich in vitamin C. It tastes sour. It is however more plentiful than orange.
The pappya and the wood-apple too are very useful fruits. Both of them have food as well as medicinal value. They are available all over the county, but they are not as plentiful as they should be.
The other important fruits of our county are the guava, the palm, the native apple, the shaddock, the pomegranate, the watermelon and the black berries. Children are fond of black berries and guavas. The guava is rich in food value. It grows in plenty in Barishal. Besides, the kamranga is another notable fruit. It tastes sour. It contains enough vitamin C.
Fruits are useful in many ways. They are very much essential to prevent diseases and keep our body fit. They can help preparing a balanced diet. Some medicine, syrups and tonics are made from juice of fruits. Besides, some fruits are used to prepare jam, jellies, chatni etc. On the other hand, many families earn their livelihood by growing fruits and by selling them.
